By the late 1950s, the attitude of Hollywood toward television was starting to change. The studios were beginning to understand that they could no longer beat television, but now had to join it, in order to survive ﬁnancially. They not only were beginning to produce original material for the medium, but were also starting to release their earlier material for exhibition there. ”30 As a consequence, animated ﬁlms from the theatrical era began to be exposed to a new and appreciative audience (albeit one that was often unaware of their prior existences and incarnations), and in a way that denied both credit to the original producers and an understanding of how and when they were produced.
With the exception of a popular series featuring the elderly, nearsighted human being Mr. Magoo (voiced memorably by Jim Backus), UPA eschewed regular series production in 30 America Toons In favor of well-designed and artistically stylized one-shot ﬁlms.
