The issue at stake here is not whether religion originates in fear of death, although one should be cautious with such sweeping generalizations, but that phenomena are included into the definition when they should constitute objects of study. 4 Broad or narrow definitions of religion? We argued above that broad definitions of religion will stimulate the study of religion in contexts that are not ordinarily considered to be religious. On the other hand, sweeping definitions that include different phenomena tend to conceal those differences.
