This absence of clarity on role or lack of focus makes it difficult to order priorities in the allocation of scarce priorities including the pastor's time. In other situations, that central issue may be real estate or an inadequate financial base or staffing or some other means-to-an-end issue. Without a clear definition of that central issue, it is difficult to formulate recommended courses of action. What Do I Recommend? The purpose of this chapter is to suggest a series of questions that will be running through the consultant's mind before and during that parish consultation.

Chapter V What Does the Client Expect? --"No one wants advice--only corroboration. ----John Steinbeck We have two questions we would like for you to address," explained the most influential volunteer leader in this large and rapidly growing suburban congregation founded in 1940. "First, should we relocate from this site to a larger and more accessible parcel of land? " The request was for a twenty-four-hour visit to respond to those two questions. At the end of the first hour, it was obvious that this congregation had two choices, either to plateau in size or relocate.

This approach avoids that complicated variable of the definition of a member and makes attenders the base line for analysis. " For rapidly growing congregations that are effective in assimilating newcomers, the common pattern is the equivalent of one full-time paid position for each 100 average worship attendance, but most of these will be part-time staff. For low commitment and numerically shrinking churches, a common pattern is one fulltime and one part-time staff position for each 100 at worship.
